After discovering that her sister Dennee is alive and is being held at a D'Haran prison, Kahlan rescues her by disguising herself as a Mord'Sith with Richard in tow as her prisoner. Kahlan confesses the warden who then takes her to Dennee, and helps Kahlan and Dennee escape the prison.

 As Darken Rahl plans to obtain the third and final Box of Orden from Queen Milena of Tamarang, Zedd poses as a puppeteer at her daughter Princess Violet's birthday party while Richard and Kahlan attempt to delay Rahl's emissary from reaching Tamarang. Zedd befriends Rachel, a ten-year-old girl enslaved as Princess Violet's playmate. With her help, Zedd steals the third Box of Orden and replaces it with a look-alike. In Kahlan's absence, Denna and Constance, two Mord-Sith, captured Richard while Zedd was able to escape. Denna began to slowly break Richard through physical and mental torture. Richard boasted that they couldn’t kill him, since Darken Rahl wanted Richard alive, and Denna responded by killing him immediately. Then she leaned over his corpse and breathed a white mist into his mouth. When Richard shuttered back to life, she explained that she had the magic of the Breath of Life and could revive him if he died. In this way, not even death could save Richard from Denna.

Richard is practicing his swordsmanship as he cuts through fruit floating in the air with help from Zedd. Zedd then makes a melon invisible and tells Richard to cut it. Richard starts cutting through the air with his sword blindly and doesn't get the melon. Zedd tells Richard that he needs to learn to see what is not there because some of Darken Rahl's minions can hide themselves with magic. Richard focuses not on where the melon is, but instead what is behind the melon and with this focus he is able to see where the melon is and cuts it in four parts. Richard gets excited and Zedd tells him that he should not get too excited because his enemies will be tougher than a melon.

The bounty hunter asks his partner if he found Richard or his comrades, and his partner replies that their tracks were too well covered and he only found a pendant. He tosses it to the side, defeated, but the bounty hunter catches it. He takes out a flier with the information on the bounty on Richard and compares the pendant to the one in the picture of Richard, and realizes it is his.
